Course Overview

Roblox Game Development
Recommended Grades 5–9 | 5 Days

Employing the Roblox platform, students learn game design and development. Over the course of the program, students become proficient with the Lua programming language, build multiplayer worlds and even create their own game.

 

No prior programming experience is required; however, students should be proficient with a keyboard and mouse.

Introduction to Python
Recommended Grades 9–11 | 5 Days

Learn the same language that allows Tesla cars to drive autonomously and iRobot vacuums map out your home. This course not only provides an introduction to Python, but it also includes an overview of data science and machine-learning/artificial intelligence.

 

This course culminates in a fun but challenging project to build a classification machine-learning model to analyze movie reviews.

Machine-Learning/Artificial Intelligence
Recommended Grades 9–11 | 5 Days

This course covers a variety of machine-learning/artificial intelligence algorithms and techniques, including Random Forest, nearest neighbor variants, and TensorFlow. Students will participate in a capstone project to build and customize ad neural-network, machine-learning-powered arcade space shooter game.

 

Students taking this course should already have a solid grasp of intermediate-to-advanced Python or have completed the Introduction to Python course.

Coding Career Lab, Powered by the Mason Game & Technology Academy

Accelerate your development of coding

The Coding Career Lab, Powered by the Mason Game & Technology Academy, is an immersive educational day program designed to provide students in grades 5–11 with the opportunity to explore and develop a passion for coding, computer science, and game design.

 

Utilizing curriculum carefully created by faculty from George Mason University’s Virginia Serious Game Institute (VSGI), a leading game-design incubator, students spend five days learning key coding skills through hands-on, project-based application.
 

Students will discover how to turn their programming ideas into reality while studying one of three courses:

  • Roblox Game Development

  • Introduction to Python

  • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence

Locations & Dates

The Coding Career Lab will be held in six locations across the country. Each location will have two separate five-day sessions. Sessions run Monday through Friday from
9 a.m.–4∶30 p.m. with extended day options available.
